Patrick Ewing Sneakers
Basketball legend Patrick Ewing released his own line of
sneakers in the early 1990’s. Some say that he was merely trying to capitalize on the success that another
basketball great, Michael Jordan, had found when Nike started to promote his line of shoes, the Air Jordans,
back in the early 80’s. However, if you look at Patrick Ewing unique playing style and colorful career on and
off the court with the New York Knicks, you will know that he could never do something that wasn’t his own
idea. Patrick Ewing sneakers are a tribute to the player.
Patrick Ewing sneakers were only available for a few years from approximately 1993
to 1995. Unfortunately, the trend never caught on and the Ewing line of sneakers went out of business. Today, there
are rumors that the Canadian company, United Front, is going to start releasing retro versions of the Ewing
sneakers and eventually expand the line. They bought the rights to the shoes in 2007, but nothing more concrete can
be verified at the moment.
Patrick Ewing sneakers are similar in style to other high end basketball shoes of
the time. For example, the Rouge II is pair of black hightops with a padded purple tongue. On the heel is "Ewing"
embroidered in big white letters and his number, 33. The midsole is prominent and speckled in grey and white. There
is a large Velcro strap across the laces to hold them in place. The strap says "rouge" in purple letters. Even the
soles are decorated in white and black with Ewing’s name in big purple letters. It is a stylish shoe, but could
only be released as an early 90’s retro edition.
Other Patrick Ewing sneakers can be found in bold designs of white and black or
white with blue and orange highlights – the New York Knicks colors. If you are looking for a pair of authentic
Patrick Ewing sneakers today, your best bet is to hunt around on E-bay. There is no guarantee, but sometimes people
are cleaning out their closets. Until United Front gives a definitive press release on their acquisition any other
Ewing sneaker you find on the web will probably be a counterfeit.
