Sneakers without Socks
As long as people have been wearing sneakers, the debate has raged about wearing sneakers without
socks. Depending on the year, it is either in or out of fashion. Depending on the type of sneaker is it either
practical or impractical. All one can do is weigh the pros and cons of wearing sneakers without socks and let
everyone make up his or her own mind.
Your mother may say: "Put on some socks! That’s what they’re there for." It is true that today’s
absorbent athletic socks evolved with sneakers. The typical athletic sock is white, so the dye doesn’t run off onto
your foot, and has a deep knap, so that there is plenty of surface area in which to absorb the sweat. A knap is the
pilly, fuzzy surface on the inside of your socks. Athletic socks are meant to be worn with athletic shoes, namely
sneakers. They act as another layer of cushioning between your foot and the ground, dampening the pressure placed
on your bones as your run. They also protect your skin from rubbing against the inner surface of your sneaker. This
will prevent most blisters. Socks also absorb your sweat and then can be easily removed and laundered before they
get too smelly. For all these reasons you should wear socks with sneakers.
On the other side of the coin, sneakers without socks look cool. Why else would there be so many
types of short socks that don’t even poke over the top of your shoe? If you are trying a sneakers and skirt look,
there is nothing worse than a big white sock line. Also, socks make your feet get too hot, which leads to more
sweating. This is especially true if you sneakers have a lot of interior padding, such as Vans skateboarding
sneakers. Lots of sneakers are either made of canvas or another soft fabric so you don’t need the extra layer of
sock protection. However, you will find that wearing sneakers without socks makes your sneakers quickly start to
smell. This means living with smelly feet or taking the trouble to washing them. So it is worth it to wear sneakers
without socks? Only you can decide.
